Self Reflection
It is amazing that how many computer programs I have learned throughout the semester. These are the programs that I now know how to use:
Garageband, iTune, and Audacity for sound
Gif builder Carbon, Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop, and Aperture for image and animation.
iMovie for movie
Finale for music notation.
These softwares and web-making will definitely allow me 1) to teach children more effectively and efficiently with sound, image, and movie, and 2) to grow more as a musician. I will continue to explore these programs and web-making so that I can provide more effective lessons for my students. Also, I will spend more time learning how to use Audacity for editing the sound and will soon start learning Logic Studio and protool for recording, mixing, and mastering so that I can produce my own album independently. Moreover, I will explore more about movie-making and its sound so that I can connect sound with image (or connect image with sound) and learn more from its collaboration. Lastly, I strongly believe that these technologies and media will enhance connection and communication with people in different parts of the world.
My Final Project
You can visit my final project at www.learningforfun.net
I made this website with iWeb of Mac for both elementary and secondary students who are just beginning the guitar, music-making, movie-making, photography, and Korean.
I used a variety of programs for the site to communicate with the user: Audacity for sound, Aperture and Adobe photoshop CS 5 for images, and iMovie for movies. I wish that this site help many students improve their guitar, making music, making movie, photography, and Korean.
Flash
I was first uncomfortable learning Adobe Flash because
I had no experience working on it and it seemed to be very complicated.
After Dr. Yen's lecture on the program, I just tried it to see how it goes.
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
These are the steps I follow for creating a flash animation:
1. open the flash -> create New: Action Script 2.0
2. Change FPS to 12.00 frames per second
3. choose the rectangle tool on the menu on the left hand side and create a shape on the stage and then click on the select tool on the menu on the left hand side.
4. Go to "Modify" menu and "covert to symbol" and select "Movie Clip"
5. select on 30th clips and go to "Insert"
6. change the location for the new location and may change the size
7. select the frame in between
8. control button and click "Classic Tween"
For text
1. choose "T" and font style
2. Write and color the word
3. Modify menu-> Break Apart-> Modify menu, timeline, distribute to layer
4. Select the final frame-> insert, timeline, keyframe
5. do the same thing for the rest.
6. Control and mouse "Classic Tween" between the frames
Work on the individual letter
6. select the frames, insert, timeline, keyframe, and move the letter and design it the way I want
7. Control and mouse "Classic Tween" between the frames
Import a piece of image and a clip of music to the flash
File, import, import to library, choose the image and music
Create a new layer and drag & drop the image on the background
-go to modify menu and "Convert to Symbol" and Type"Movie Clip"
-Create a new layer for music.
1. First frame, Insert menu--> timeline--> Key frame, and click on sound (Property menu)
2. on Property, go to sync, chose "Start"
3. Publish: go to file, publish setting, Check Flash (.swf) & HTML (.html), choose the location to save the files, and publish the files.(Hit the publish button in the desk top)
Photo
Photography is the one I feel most strong. I have been taking pictures and have done my own exhibition a number of times.
Photography is from Greek, which means to drawing a picture with light. Thus, the first thing that I do when I edit the image is adjusting the luminance of the photo. Andthen, using the channel mixer, I change the image to Black and white. The reason I use the channel mixer instead of just mere black and white menu is that the mixer gives more detail work so that I can work more seriously on the gray scale which is the essence of the black and white image.
Once I finished working on the luminance and black & white process, I move onto the cropping and filtering if necessary, then resize the image. The last thing I do before putting the image on the web or print the image is sharpening. Sharpening is extremely important especially when you print the image. It gives better the contour and looks more focused.
music notation program "Finale 2009"
I have had "Finale 2009" for few years but
I was so lazy to use it and I also I was kinda reluctant to use it because It seemed to be very hard and I had trouble writing basic things such as different voices, rehearsal marks, and dynamics.
The most trouble I had when I first used it years ago was writing music in different voices. I wanted to stem different directions according to their voice parts, but
because I did not know that I was required select different layers for different parts.
After learning Finale in the class and doing the assignment, I feel more confident and I am willing to write music with Finale in the future.
A video for Noah Lee
This is my second video assignment for the class.
I am becoming a father this February and I dedicate this video to my beautiful son, Noah Lee.
My wife Joanne and I as parents try to provide a variety of experience for Noah while getting ready to be born. We often go out and visit many places such as museums, live clubs, and parks. In the video, we visited MoMa NYC where we enjoyed diverse art works by many great artists. I hope Noah appreciated all these arts and enjoyed the day.
I filmed with JVC HD camera and edited with iMovie.
Music was recorded in Vancouver, BC on November 5, 2010 with Garageband.
Jon Lee on Guitar; Kenn Nakamine on Bass
